Scapa 1980-2005 | 25 Year Old
Island Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Distillery Bottling 70cl / 54%
A wonderful old bottle of the rare Scapa 1980 25-year-old. This bottling appeared in 2005 during a turbulent time for the tiny Orcadian distillery, which was midway through a major refurbishment project and in the process of being sold to Chivas Brothers.
Somewhat unusually for an official 25-year-old bottling at the time, Scapa 1980 was bottled at its poky cask strength of 54%, a genius move in retrospect as the whisky retains plenty of potency on what is a very complex palate, sweet and creamy but balanced by a lot of herbal and mineral notes, chalk, tobacco, citrus, dried exotic fruit and bakery spices.
Sadly this bottling was a one-off, remaining the oldest official bottling of Scapa until the release of the 1977 and 1979 vintage editions in 2020. A fine dram that shows what Scapa is really capable of.
