Mortlach 18 Year Old
Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Distillery Bottling 50cl / 43.4%
An old half-litre bottle of Mortlach 18-year-old Speyside single malt whisky. This 50cl official bottling was originally released by owners Diageo as part of the distillery's much-trumpeted first ever core range in 2014.
Sadly, despite the whisky's quality, the new core range flopped badly with most Mortlach fans due to the fatal combination of small bottles and unrealistically high prices, especially compared to the much-loved old Flora & Fauna Mortlach 16-year-old, which had been discontinued to make way for the new range.
Diageo cut their losses and launched a new age-statement Mortlach core range in 2018, but in a further head-shakingly strange decision the Mortlach 18-year-old, which had been the best of the new releases, had disappeared along with the rest of the original range.
This short-lived 18-year-old Mortlach, bottled at a hearty but easy-drinking 43.4%, comes from one of the handful of small batches of 18-year-old sherry and refill American oak casks of Mortlach bottled for the range between 2014-2017, and is now a tasty but hard to find collector's item.
