A limited edition Macallan 40-year-old Speyside single malt whisky bottled by the distillery in 2016. This was only the second ever non-vintage official Macallan 40-year-old, following a one-off travel retail edition bottled back in 2005.

The story behind this Macallan 40-year-old was that apparently Bob Dalgarno, Macallan’s then-whiskymaker, was particularly impressed with the batch of sherry casks vatted in 2006 to make that year’s edition of Macallan 30-year-old. Racked into refill butts for marrying, this whisky had originally come from a batch of 27 casks from nine different vintages, with the youngest whisky distilled in 1976. 

Dalgarno decide to keep one of the marrying butts aside for further maturation at full strength, checked it again in 2011 to make sure it was still as good as he thought it was, and then left it a further five years until 2016 when it was ready to be bottled as Macallan 40-year-old. Released at a sturdy 45%, this 40-year-old Macallan sherry cask edition was a limited edition of just 500 bottles. A further limited edition 40-year-old was released the following year before Macallan 40-year-old was absorbed into the Macallan Red collection in 2020.
