Macallan 1841 Replica
Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Distillery Bottling 70cl / 41.7%
A bottle of the Macallan 1841 Replica Speyside single malt whisky, this appeared in 2002 and was the third release in the series of replicas released by Macallan to recreate the style of whisky from the nineteenth century. Of course, the only problem with this lovely idea was that the bottles that the replicas were based on were, in fact, clever fakes that the distillery had acquired.
Following an extended controversy, the Replica series was eventually discontinued, but as an ironic twist the replicated whiskies that Macallan created based on the fakes were actually pretty good - this particular edition has a whiff of smoke and received an enormous 95 point score from the late, great whisky writer Michael Jackson - and over time these notorious replica series Macallans have eventually been recognised as interesting and very drinkable sherry-influenced Macallan whiskies in their own right - and at least they're real Macallans...
