Lagavulin 12 Year Old | Special Releases 2023
Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Distillery Bottling 70cl / 56.4%
Diageo's 2023 Special Releases see the welcome return of the cask strength Lagavulin 12-year-old - but this time with a twist, as the whisky has been finished in tequila casks.
Perplexingly subtitled The Ink of Legends for no apparent reason other than to complement the tattooed lady on the label, this 12-year-old Lagavulin was finished in casks that previously held anejo tequila from Diageo's Don Julio distillery in Mexico.
Previously 50% shareholders, Diageo took full control of Don Julio in 2014 in a complicated swap deal that saw Cuervo pay $408m and exchange their half of Don Julio for the Bushmills distillery in Northern Ireland.
Diageo subsequently fought long and hard for the right to finish their whiskies in tequila barrels, and this Lagavulin is the most prominent fruit of that battle. Bottled at a very hearty 56.4%, if any whisky can survive a tequila finish, it'll be this one.
