Glenlivet 1939 Gordon & MacPhail 1970s
Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Bottled by: Gordon & MacPhail 26 2/3 Fl Oz / 70 Proof
A small batch Glenlivet 1939 Speyside single malt whisky bottled by Elgin indie bottlers Gordon & MacPhail in the 1970s.
The 1939 Glenlivets, like many of the other aged Speysiders by G&M, were noticeably smokier and peatier whiskies balanced by an equally intense and luscious fruit character. This was whisky-making from a different era entirely. 1939 is the year when distilling in Scotland really started to slow down due to wartime constraints, but the far-sighted G&M were already stockpiling casks of whisky to mature in their warehouses - some of which are still there today.
These 1939s offer a great glimpse into how the whisky styles of that era were evolving into something heavier. After the war, they would never really be the same again. Again, liquid history.
