Glenfairn 12 Year Old Pure Malt 1980s
Pure Malt Scotch Whisky
Distillery Bottling 75cl / 40%
An old bottle of Glenfairn 12-year-old malt whisky, bottled in the 1980s under the now-forbidden ‘pure malt’ classification.
The term pure malt was widely misused in the latter decades of the 20th century, with some producers using it to indicate single malt whisky and others using it to denote a blend of single malt whiskies - a rare type of whisky also sometimes known as vatted malt in those days. In the end both ‘pure malt’ and ‘vatted malt’ were banned by the Scotch Whisky Association in the early Noughties following the Cardhu debacle, while any assemblage of malt whiskies from more than one distillery must now be referred to as ‘Blended Malt’.
