Ardbeg Uigeadail Bottled 2005
Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Distillery Bottling 70cl / 54.2%
An early batch of Ardbeg Uigeadail Islay single malt whisky, this was a limited edition bottled in 2005 without colouring or chill filtration from a batch of bourbon and sherry casks at a hefty 54.2% strength.
Ardbeg Uigeadail caused a sensation among Islay whisky fans when it was first introduced in 2003, and these early versions are bursting with the natural complexity and maturity of the Allied era Ardbeg distilled in the early to mid-1990s - and the first batches were also rumoured to contain sherry cask stock from the 1970s.
Certainly there's no question that these first few editions of Uigeadail bottled in the mid-Noughties were, and remain, far superior to the embarrassingly lightweight modern Ardbeg Uigeadail of today thanks to the superb quality of the sherry casks used. Early Uigeadail batches had a deep, thick intensity and complexity that Ardbeg no longer seems able to reproduce.
Rich molasses style peat with a real syrupy, medicinal, phenolic sherry, gingery smoke, smoky bacon, a few dark fruits, some seashore freshness, antiseptic, dark chocolate, cinnamon and bakery spices, brine, peat oils, boiler smoke and minerals. A beast of a whisky and rightly a classic of its day.
