A single cask bottling of The English Distillery's Smoky Triple 2013 vintage English single malt whisky bottled without chill filtration in 2024 by the Norfolk distillery formerly known as St. George's, which was founded in 2006 by the Nelstrop family as England's first legal whisky distillery in over a century. St. George's rebranded as The English Distillery in 2023.
This 2013 vintage St. George's / English Distillery Smoky Triple English single malt was triple distilled from barley peated to 51ppm for a medium-bodied but still pretty phenolic whisky, and is one of 223 bottles turned out at its natural cask strength of 57.4%, so it's not a big stretch to guess it was likely a hogshead cask.
Eyebrows were raised in Scotland at the concept of peated English single malt whisky in the early days (and, no doubt, in Ireland at the concept of triple-distilled English whisky), but almost twenty years later it's clear that it was a stroke of genius from St. George's. It's exciting to see these longer-aged cask strength English single malts becoming more common nowadays, especially the smoky ones, and there's plenty more to come from The English Distillery.
