An old bottle of the Port Ellen 1978 29-year-old, bottled at cask strength in 2008 without colouring or chill filtration for Diageo's Special Releases. This was the 8th Release of Port Ellen in the annual Special Releases.

This 29-year-old Port Ellen 1978 was assembled from a small batch of American and European oak refill casks and was a release of 6618 bottles at a robust natural cask strength of 55.3%. These Special Release 1978 Port Ellens always had the edge over the 1979s from the same series, just that bit more oily, thick and coastal with a real petrol edge to them. The 8th Release has a gentler smoke than some of the earlier releases and is a deliciously rounded dram.
