As former owners of Bowmore, Morrison Distillers have, it's fair to say, some pretty good contacts on Islay. So it's worth paying attention when they put out a secret Islay single malt, particularly a bourbon-matured one like this Mac-Talla Mara at a hefty cask strength of 58.2%.

Mac-Talla Mara may not be Bowmore (in fact we'd guess that's pretty unlikely), but it's a cask strength smoky young Islay, bottled without colouring or chill filtration, and the price looks very reasonable so this one is definitely on our list.

Nose: Intense bonfire smoke with hints of citrus zest.

Palate: Smoked barbecue meat, charred oak.

Finish: Long powerful finish. Intense and smoky for those adventurous palates
