An old half-litre bottle of Hibiki 12-year-old Japanese blended whisky.
Hibiki 12-year-old was first introduced in 2009 in an attempt to take some pressure off the standard Hibiki 17-year-old, whose elevated demand was outstripping supply and decimating the company's aged stocks. The blend contains bourbon-matured malt from Yamazaki and sherry cask-matured Hakushu alongside grain whisky from Suntory's Chita distillery and a proportion of 12-year-old Yamazaki finished in casks that held the delicious Japanese plum liqueur, umeshu.
Sadly, Hibiki 12-year-old was so good that it quickly became a victim of its own success, fanning the flames of the Japanese whisky craze and adding further pressure to Suntory's rapidly-depleting warehouse stock. Hibiki 12-year-old was discontinued in 2015, but this delicious and beautifully-balanced Japanese whisky still has a legion of fans who remember it fondly and continue to hope that one day Suntory's reserves will be sufficiently replenished to allow Hibiki 12-year-old to be relaunched.
