A 1983 Clynelish single cask bottled as a 20-year-old in 2003 without colouring by Signatory Vintage. This 20-year-old Clynelish 1983 came from a single cask 2695, described only as 'oak' so probably a refill cask, and yielded 343 bottles at 43%, so most likely a hogshead rather than a butt.

The early 1980s (and 1983 in particular) were a terrible time for the whisky industry, but Clynelish, in common with several other SMD distilleries including Port Ellen and Caol Ila, was making some absolutely outstanding spirit - the 1983 vintage is particularly popular among Clynelish aficionados for its delicious wax, fruit and minerally notes, usually with a hint of soot.
