The Caol Ila 12yo can vary from batch to batch but it generally shows big notes of salt, fresh lemon juice, germoline floor cleaner, tar, creosote, fish nets, pebbles and white fruits. It is probably the best 'gateway' Islay malt on the market. While not as potent as the southern Islay trilogy, it balances its peaty power with a vigorous coastal freshness and medicinal complexity that makes it unique amongst all whiskies. There are many great Caol Ilas out there, in fact it is probably one of the most consistent distillates in the world, but the 12yo is the true benchmark in terms of raw and natural distillery character. A must try for anyone even remotely serious about whisky.
