Campbeltown Loch Bottled 2022
Campbeltown Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Distillery Bottling 70cl / 46%
A bottle of J.A. Mitchell's Campbeltown Loch blended malt whisky. This is one of the 2022 batches of Campbeltown Loch, which had reappeared the previous year after a long hiatus.
The new editions of Campbeltown Loch have proven extremely popular, as several very significant changes had been made to the whisky. Where the brand was formerly a blended Scotch containing grain whisky as well as single malts, and was usually bottled between 21 and 30 years old, the 2021 batch (and every subsequent release) was a blended malt whisky containing all five Campbeltown malts - Springbank, Longrow and Hazelburn from Springbank, plus Glengyle's Kilkerran malt and finally Glen Scotia.
The other notable differences characterising the post-2021 batches were the increase in strength from 40% to 46%, which was obviously great news, and the whisky's lack of an age statement. On the face of it, this latter change was a negative for many fans, but it came with the not inconsiderable silver lining of a significantly reduced RRP, though the whisky proved so popular that prices on the secondary market briefly surged into three figures.
The new versions of Campbeltown Loch are assembled by Mitchell's at Springbank from a mix of sherry and bourbon casks and have continued to appear every year since 2021, with demand now sufficient to warrant multiple batches each year. No information on malt proportions has ever been officially released, and naturally there is significant batch variation, but the quality of the reinvented Campbeltown Loch blended malts has remained very high and helped reinvigorate the blended malt category, while providing excellent value for fans of Campbeltown whisky.
